I had my right knee replaced 25 July 2011 at age 63. I was discharged 28 July with CPM machine which I had for five weeks and used religiously 5-6 hours daily. I went to physical therapy 3-4 time per week. By week 7 I had about 95 degrees flexion. My surgeon decided a knee manipulation was in order. On 14 Sep my knee was manipulated to about 125 degrees. My surgeon, on follow-up exam 9 days later, stated it went well; no real force had to be applied. When I saw him 9 days later my knee was worse than before the manipulation—about 80-85 degrees. Also my quadriceps was stretched so much the manipulation tore them. It’s now been over four weeks. My quads are still sore and the inside of my thigh is black and blue. For the first three weeks my quads were extremely sore and the bruising was significant. Every morning I’d awake with very sore quads—like I did an extremely hard leg workout the day before. The surgeon had never seen this before. He also stated most of his patients have increased range of motion after the manipulation—I had less. He was at a loss to explain it. My physical therapist thought my quads must have been real tight and had not been stretched much over the past 4-5 years. Before the surgery I had been very active. Cycling 150-200 miles a week plus doing Crossfit twice a week. I also did yoga 4-5 times per week. I used run (27 years) and play racquetball (37 years). Last week I was finally able to ride the bike (stationary) but it’s difficult and knee is still stiff. Has anyone experienced the quad tearing during manipulation? I have not been able to find anything on the Internet.
