Bill, For me this is the real healing for my leg. My leg has atrophied from a year of going around with a bent leg from some surgery I had in 2010, I had my knee surgery done on Nov 2nd of 2011. Manipulation on Dec 19th 2011. The muscle relaxes enough to allow me more mobiltiy, but it must be deep tissue massage.. It REALLY hurts as my leg is a mountain of bruises, but it DOES help my muscles to relax and respond to therapy. Good Luck.. Your therapist will do it for you if you ask, that is who does mine.

@Bill, it depends on what she looks like! my PT lady massages my knee and lower thigh, it feels better afterward but it's short lived. you didn't mention when you had your TKR. if it's under 6-8 months you will still have swelling and that achy feeling. you said you're at 105... as the swelling subsides, that ROM should increase some as well. stic with you PT if you.can!!!

Can massage after manipulation help reduce the tightness in both the quad and abductor (interior thigh?) muscles? I am at 105 of flex but tightness above the knee after every modality, machine, bike, stretch, and water seem to prevent better measurements. I just seem to lock up. Has massage helped anyone?

ray... I am at four months and I have a lingering pain in my knee as well. I believe that when they are banging and applying the titanium part in place they irritate a lot of things. I get sciatica, from my.lumbar region down to my foot. If I can find that special position / twist while on my back I will actually hear a click or pop in my lower back and that knee pain is gone, until I roll over or twist. I had this during my first TKR recovery last spring and here I am a year a couple week later and that knee, hip, back feels great!!! I am just getting impatient with the second TKR... I know it will be be same in time.

Wonder if my recent 132 degree ROM causes lumbar region back ache or is it TRAMADOL related and does it create my new temporary hip pain too ?? .. I seem to have reached my ROM goal, as forced PT manipulation works .. will ROM stay if I quit my Physical Therapist & exercise @ home or do walking during the 6 months recovery time after TKR ?? .. after 2+ months, I still have some lingering come/go knee pain ... RAY

TKE on Aug 9, 2011, Manipulation on Jan 23, 2012. I am past what I was at 90, to now maybe 110. Seems like a lot of trouble -the manipulation - to only gain 10 degrees. Doc said that he got a very loud pop, not the usual crack, snapple, but a loud POP. louder than he was comfortable with, but nothing broken. Amazingly, no pain, just mild soreness, and some swelling. My flexion range is still less than what I want, but my knee does feel different, something happened, I may have breached a wall. Swelling seems to persists. If I don't do the exercises, I lose Flex, if I do them, I get swelling. Doc says give it time.

Cindy, Thanks for that exercise tip. I am also trying a wide belt around my thigh and while buckled using my right foot to pull down while my left knee is on the ottaman. Sounds strange but it is working!! Whatever you have to do is my motto. And I can do this as much as I can stand too. Thank you again for all the helpful tips and now I feel we are connected to the world of fellow TKR'S and maybe bring some comfort to someone else today. God Bless you all..

Thank you all for your very informative comments. This chat site has been more helpful than even my conversations with my doctor. I am 57 years old and received a Rotating implant, because of my age and to give me more mobility. I do have other health issues which, I feel is causing me more than needed aggrevation than wanted. I am slowly improving using water therapy heated pool.. I love the water and as it helps to keep swelling down is allowing me to have more flex and more mobiltiy. This, in oppinion is the best alternative for someone like me. I do have alot of issues still with scar tissue that is already forming back, I was able to break up some yesterday with exstreme exercise of motion. Keep up the good work TKR warriors!!!
